SMITE – Did Warriors have it Coming?

SMITE – Did Warriors have it Coming?

The recent Janus patch introduced something no one could’ve seen coming. Hi Rez nerfed not just one, not just two, but rather the entirety of the Warrior class as a whole. If you haven’t read the patch notes yet, I highly recommend that you do. You can check them out right here. This lead to a plethora of speculation of “Are Warriors still useful in the solo lane?”, or “Are Warriors still viable at all?”. The answers to these questions requires further insight into the topic, since while most of the Warriors had their Attack Speed per level, and In-Hand Power per level reduced, some had other tweaks to their stats and abilities, but really did warriors have it coming?

First we need to ask ourselves, “Why were these nerfs implemented?”. Well for starters, if you’ve been keeping up with the competitive scene you would’ve noticed that Warriors like: Sun Wukong, and Odin were constantly either first to be picked, or first to be banned. Their performance greatly overshadowed that of Guardians, to a point where Guardians were hardly ever picked. Not only were they dominating the Support role, they also had control of the Solo lane, and the Jungle. They were everywhere, thanks to them being as tanky as Guardians, and as powerful as Assassins. Hi Rez stated that when Warriors were released back in the beta-testing days, they were intended as “Guardians with physical damage”, instead of simply “Guardians that just do more damage”, and so with these nerfs Warriors are now intended to be “jacks of all trades masters of none”. Hybrid builds such as: Heartseeker rush followed by Hide of the Urchin will be greatly less effective, but instead you are now forced into choosing between either: damage, or tankiness. Without further ado, let’s take a look at all the Warriors, one by one.

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 1.42 to 1.
  • In-Hand Power per Level reduced from 2.25 to 2.1.
  • Rain Dance
    • This ability no longer provides an Attack Speed debuff on enemies.

Chaac lost a very negligible amount of Attack Speed, and In-Hand Power, which doesn’t matter all that much. What really hits him hard is the nerf to Rain Dance. Rain Dance used to reduce enemies’ Attack Speed by up to 25%. This means Chaac now needs to be more wary of Assassins, and Hunters instead of going in guns blazing. This nerf does not affect his performance too much, and he will continue to be a viable pick for the solo-lane.

 Guan Yu

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 1.5 to 0.9.
  • In-Hand Power per Level reduced from 2.25 to 2.
  • Taolu Assault
    • This ability no longer provides Guan Yu a protection buff per hit.

Again the In-Hand Power reduction is negligible, however the Attack Speed reduction will seriously cripple his performance. Going from 1.5 to 0.9 is a lot. But that’s not all, Guan Yu can no longer steal protections from his enemies with Taolu Assault. Before, you could engage and distract 3 enemy gods simultaneously, while coming out unscathed thanks to this ability. That was Guan Yu’s “thing”, and now you can’t do that anymore… Guan Yu was no Tyr, or Sun Wukong before, but now I honestly believe he won’t be picked nearly as much as before. Mind you he’ll still be viable, but no where near as good as he used to be.

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 1.26 to 0.8.
  • Driving Strike
    • Casting time reduced from 0.233 to 0.1s.
    • Hercules is now immune to Knockback in Driving Strike. Note: This gives him precedence against other dashes not immune to knockback.
  • Excavate
    • Hercules is now crowd control Immune during the casting time of this ability.

The Attack Speed reduction – although apparent – does not hurt nearly as much as Guan Yu’s Attack Speed reduction did. If anything, I would consider Hercules to have been buffed overall. Now if Hercules runs into a Tyr using Fearless with Driving Strike, they will go through each other instead of Hercules getting knocked back, and with the 0.1s cast time this should be easier than ever to hit. Furthermore, the days of Hercules getting CCed for days while casting his ulti are now officially over. Hercules is currently being constantly either first to be picked, or first to be banned, but has he reached the level of OP? Well, we’re going to need a lot more time play-testing to find out for sure.

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 1.2 to 1.1.
  • In-Hand Power per Level reduced from 2.25 to 2.

  • Gungnir’s Might
    • This ability no longer provides passive protections.
  • Odin’s Shout
    • This ability no longer provides passive physical power.
  • Ring of Spears
    • This ability no longer provides protections to team-mates while in the ring, only to Odin.

Oh Odin Odin Odin, poor little Odin…The stat changes can be completely ignored, but the passives were what made Odin scary early game, since late-game he falls off compared to the other Warriors. The passives were what turned Odin from a sub-par god to a regularly used god. Also now, his ultimate is so risky to use if your teammates are nearby since they no longer gain protections, which will probably lead to them dying a horrible bloody death. In my opinion, Hi Rez went too far with the nerfs on Odin. They didn’t want him to be constantly banned, but now I wonder if he will ever be picked again in the first place.

  • Attack Speed per Level reduced from 2.1 to 1.1
  • Starting Attack Speed increased from 1.0 to 1.1.

He lost Attack Speed, but they boosted up his base Attack Speed to make up for it. I can’t really see Osiris changing all that much. I can’t really determine whether this will affect his early game or mid-game, however I will link a video in the end where someone does all the maths, so you can check that out if you want to.

 Sun Wukong

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 1.87 to 0.9.
  • In-Hand Power per Level reduced from 2.25 to 2.
  • The Magic Cudgel
    • Base damage reduced from 90/140/190/240/290 to 80/120/160/200/240.
  • Master’s Will
    • This ability no longer causes knockback and interrupt, but instead slows 30% for 2s.

Let me start off by saying that, Sun Wukong is probably my favourite god in the entire game. He’s the only god I have a gem skin, and voice pack for. I also have the most worshipers on him compared to all the other gods ( Rank VI as of writing this), so to see him nerfed like this really hurts me on the inside. To start with, he lost a tonne of Attack Speed, probably more so than Guan Yu (again I will link a video in the end that does all the math). The Magic Cudgel lost 10/20/30/40/50 damage across the board, which really hurts his clear, and poke. But the fact that Master’s Will no longer knocks up is insane, this ability didn’t do that much damage to start with, it was only used as an interrupt. He used to be able to jump into a teamfight, and interrupt the entire enemy team, he can still do that with his Ox form mind you, but 9 times out of 10 the Tiger form is way more useful. Sun Wukong will still be an amazing support, but this did hurt his potential to Jungle or Solo. He wasn’t used in those positions that much before, and now I don’t think he will be used in any role other than support.

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 2.1 to 0.9.
  • In-Hand Power per Level reduced from 2.25 to 2.
  • Unyielding
    • No longer applies to Roots or Cripples, which will now affect Tyr for full duration.
  • Fearless
    • (Guard Stance) This ability no longer causes knockback to enemies while in Guard Stance.
  • Power Cleave
    • Base damage reduced from 70/120/170/220/270 to 60/100/140/180/220.
    • Increased physical damage scaling from 50% to 65%.
    • The heal in Guard Stance no longer scales based on Physical Power.

The people of the Smite community have finally succeeded, after months of complaining about Tyr Hi Rez have finally listened. Tyr was repeatedly shot with the almighty nerf gun, till he could take no more. Not only did he lose a ridiculous amount of Attack Speed, but that is not all, oh no we’re just getting started with you Tyr tyrcrying2. His passive no longer protects him from Roots, or Cripple. Guard Stance Fearless no longer knockbacks enemies, and like I said with Sun Wukong, knockbacks are huge they can be extremely effective, if used at the right time, and in the right situation. He lost 10/20/30/40/50 damage on his Power Cleave, however they did slightly increase his damage scaling, but make no mistake, this is most definitely a nerf to Power Cleave’s damage. The big one though,  “The heal in Guard Stance no longer scales based on Physical Power.”, oh no it now heals for each enemy hit by 30/50/70/90/110 (max 3). Not only did they nerf his damage output, they also nerfed his survivability. Tyr the god that once made enemy solo laners pee their pants has now been reduced to practically nothing. Hi Rez most definitely over-nerfed Tyr, since he was never used in the Support role at all, he was used exclusively in the Jungle and Solo lane. But now Tyr will hardly ever be picked, except maybe as a niche pick by certain pro players in tournaments.

  • Attack Speed per level reduced from 1.6 to 1.4.
  • In-Hand Power per Level reduced from 2.25 to 2.

I was considering not even including Vamana in this post. He barely had anything done to him, he’s still gonna be the same old Vamana that has no mana.

  • General
    • Nemesis has been reclassified as an Assassin, to better fit her kit design and play style.
    • Starting Health reduced from 475 to 470.
    • Health per level reduced from 82 to 76.
    • Attack speed per level increased from 2 to 2.16.
    • Base Physical Protection decreased from 17 to 11.

Nemesis decided to bail out of the ship before it sank, deciding to join the Assassin posse. To be honest, this was something I was anticipating for quite some time. Nemesis did not have the play-style of a Warrior, she was exclusively built as an Assassin with a full damage build. She’s squishier now, but she now hits faster. To determine whether or not this be beneficial for her requires further play-testing.

For the most part, Warriors will still be able to perform their previous roles, but they just won’t be as good as they used to be. Sun Wukong will continue to be a great support, Guan Yu can still support to some extent but the nerf to Taolu Assault will greatly diminish his role in teamfights, Tyr was never really used in the Support role for starters but he could most defintely do it, Odin…eh he’ll be viable I guess but I wouldn’t recommend someone in picking him because Odin lost what made him…well Odin.

As for the solo lane, Chaac, Vamana, and Hercules are still great picks. Tyr like I said has probably been overnerfed, and to be honest I don’t think he’ll be picked for the solo lane anymore but we’ll have to wait and see. Sun Wukong was rarely used in the solo lane before due to how great of a Support he is, and now with this he’ll be even rarer in the solo lane. I don’t think Guan Yu can handle solo lane as well, but he can definitely still Support. Odin…no just…no. Osiris ehh maybe, no point in picking him in the solo lane in the first place, it is most certainly doable but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Osiris can still Jungle, Tyr can as well although the early game is going to be a lot harder for them, than before. Nemesis obviously can still Jungle as well.

This is most definitely not the death of Warriors. I do urge Hi Rez to take another look at Tyr, Odin, and Guan Yu however. Future nerfs / buffs will be necessary, but for now this is good enough. We’ll just have to wait and see how things go.

If you want to actually see the exact number changes to their Attack Speeds, and In Hand Power you can check out this video. Even if you don’t want the exact numbers, I still highly recommend you watch this video if you still want to hear more about this topic.

If you don’t play Smite yet I urge you to try it, it’s a third person action MOBA where all your abilities are skill shots. You can go register here
